Sweetie You Won’t Believe It (2020) Review

Sweetie You Won’t Believe It!

OK first things first , let’s test your knowledge on films from Kazakhstan . So you have come up with Borat and maybe Bullets of Justice with Danny Trejo (a very strange film) or Jaws 19 but after that it’s quite hard to think of anything. So when the screener appeared for Sweetie You Won’t Believe It (SYWBI) I was intrigued . I had been keeping tabs on it as it hit such festivals as Fantasia, Sitges and Frightfest and with those behemoths screening it then something must be good.

Dastan is a father to be , he is constantly nagged by his wife and decides to have one last day out going fishing with his friends. He leaves early, much to the consternation of his wife, and joins Arman (a sex toy entrepreneur) and Murat (a police officer) in a van full of sex dolls.

After parking up and making a makeshift raft from said sex dolls, the guys unexpectedly come across a gang of criminals committing a crime , thus ensues a hilarious chase across the Kazak wilderness. Now add another twist that a mysterious , superfast , one-eyed killing machine is tracking the criminal gang and what you have is an insane over-the-top adventure that is part gross out horror, part frat boy humour yet also has very intense moments with an underlying story of a man trying to get to the birth of his first child.

No SYWBI is never going to break any new ground ( I mean who doesn’t love a fart joke) but what it does it does bloody well. The characters are complete caricatures , the script is full of great one liners and the setting is absolutely stunning. The kills and gore are top notch and the mingling of genres and characters work flawlessly.

Coming in with a punchy short runtime SYWBI is a blast , you can see why festivals picked this up as it is a perfect late night film to watch with friends and just enjoy the ride.

Highly Recommended 7/10
